Golf Course Construction

Build it right and enjoy the results
.

The process of building a golf course is very complex, both financially and technically.

It requires many specialties.  The majority of the time, an owner doesn’t possess many of these specialties themselves.  They must rely on many different people and companies.

The owner is still vulnerable due to the interaction needed between the companies involved and many quality and financial concerns are below ground or are intangible to the inexperienced person.

To compound things, no one involved in the golf course construction has the operational costs as an interest.

This is why an independent “golf course consultant”, with knowledge of golf course construction, maintenance and operations, is a critical component to the success of building a golf course.

We have developed proven strategies, which results in maximizing project quality and increases the value of the project, while at the same time controlling golf course construction and operational costs.

Below are the (3) major phases of any golf construction project:

Conception and Planning

  • Audubon International certification
  • Environmental issues (IPM and site specific)
  • Financial (cost projections and budgeting)
  • GC Architect (need and selection)
  • GC Contractor (need and selection)
  • Irrigation designer (need and selection)
  • Land planning
  • Location issues
  • Soils (needs and evaluation of existing)
  • Specifications (construction and irrigation)
  • Timeline of project
  • Water (source, quantity and quality)

Pre-Construction

  • Bidding process
  • Grassing (proper selection for area and needs, seed, sod, grassing rates and timing of)
  • Greensmix
  • Specifications (construction and irrigation)
  • Staffing
  • Topsoil

Golf Course Construction, Grow-in and Maturation

  • Agronomic (problems, soils and water)
  • Bunkers (specifications, drainage and sand sources)
  • Cart paths (needs, design and contractor selection)
  • Course accessories
  • Drainage
  • Environmental issues (IPM, Audubon International and MSDS)
  • Fairways (construction, grading and grassing)
  • Fertigation
  • Fertilizer applications (composition and timing of)
  • Financial (budgeting, expense monitoring and expense control )
  • Grassing (proper selection for area and needs, seed, sod, grassing rates and timing of)
  • Greens construction (USGA or California methods, drainage and concerns/issues)
  • Greensmix (evaluate and analyze possible sources, monitor quality control)
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Irrigation (pumpstation(s), product selection, stake or modify design installation and programming)
  • Landscaping
  • Maintenance equipment
  • Maintenance building (needs, provide conceptual design and floor plan)
  • Needs assessment
  • Pre-plant (fertilizer and amendment needs)
  • Problems (agronomic, costs, delays, troubleshoot, soil and water)
  • Soils (topsoil, evaluate existing and amendment needs)
  • Specifications adherence
  • Staffing (how, when and Golf Course Superintendent selection)
  • Tee construction (drainage and quality)
  • Water (evaluate needs and sources)
